Lifestyle is an person, group, or culture’s interests, beliefs , behaviors, and behavioral orientations. Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler introduced the term with the definition of “the basic character of a person as developed early in childhood,” as in his 1929 book, The Case of Miss R. The broader sense of lifestyle as a “way or style of living” has been recorded since 1961. Lifestyle is a combination of factors which are intangible or measurable. Tangible factors specifically relate to demographic variables , i.e. the demographic profile of an individual, while intangible factors affect an individual’s psychological elements, such as personal values , preferences, and outlooks.

Compared to an urban metropolis a rural environment has different lifestyles. Even within an urban sphere location is important. The essence of the community in which a person lives influences the person’s collection of lifestyles due to variations in the degrees of affluence of different communities and their proximity to natural and cultural environments. A surf culture or lifestyle may often be present , for example, in areas close to the sea.
